Biotoxin Illness & Mold Disease

Biotoxin illness or mold sickness is a multi-system inflammatory response to exposure to biotoxins affecting the entire body, particularly within genetically susceptible individuals.

Biotoxins can cause significant damage to your health. People become exposed to biotoxins through working or living in buildings known to have had water damage, discolored ceilings, or moldy air ducts.

In its early stages, symptoms of biotoxin illness/mold sickness appear similar to those of other common conditions such as Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. By far, the most common cause of biotoxin illness is toxic mold and its by-products in water-damaged buildings (WDBs), which can be found in an individual’s home or work environment. Exposure to water-damaged buildings (WDB) has been associated with numerous health problems that include respiratory infections, fungal sinusitis, central and peripheral neuropathy, asthma, and chronic fatigue.

Usually, biotoxin illness/mold sickness is acquired following persistent exposure to the interior of a water-damaged building with resident toxigenic organisms such as fungi, mold, and bacteria.

Occupants of Water-Damaged Buildings (WDBs) with evidence of microbial amplification often describe a syndrome following chronic exposure to indoor air commonly referred to as Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). Studies have demonstrated that the indoor air of WDBs often contains a complex mixture of mycotoxins, endotoxins, fungi, bacteria and more that can be circulated and spread through air-conditioning systems.[1]

Other causes of this chronic inflammatory response can include Chronic Lyme Disease (CLD), Brown Recluse Spider Bites, or drinking contaminated food/water. Nevertheless, the most common source of SBS is toxic mold and its by-products found within water-damaged buildings. The severity of a patient’s infection is reliant on the level of exposure, genetics, and immune system.[2]
